Ah, the Secret... My wife and I routinely joke about sending out vibrations. It's so nice to be out of Los Angeles.

Volcano insurance is similar, but I was actually referring to cloud insurance.

One of the things that's human nature is that people tend to make a hypothesis and always pay more attention to when their predictions are correct than when they're not.

I have a friend who makes observations about people based on their names. "Every Michelle I've ever run across is a major bitch. I should know! That's my middle name!"

My last employer were one of those people who believed in the Law of Attraction (The Secret is best example of this, but I think you know that already). Whenever they made a positive prediction, if it turned out to be right, they were validated. If they weren't right, they thought that they just weren't trying enough.

By the way, cloud insurance? Surely, you must mean volcano insurance:

What I want to know is this: When will we as a society stop listening to doom-and-gloom pundits like Dvorak?

NEVER.

At some level, everyone fears the unknown - this is one of the techniques that governments and religions harness to gain and exercise power. Fear of not finding your next meal, fear that next year's harvest won't be good, fear of losing the good things you have in life, fear of "terror", fear of eternal damnation - the list goes on and on.

A fear-based culture creates a population that is extremely easy to manipulate and tax. Dvorak didn't make this concept up - he's just using it to professional advantage :)
In other words (and as you pointed out), his column was due and he couldn't think of anything creative or insightful to write.
